Fagen begins construction on Hungarian plant
A Fagen/ICM corn ethanol plant began construction this week in Eastern Europe. Budapest-based Pannonia Ethanol Zrt., a company developed by Ethanol Europe, has contracted with the U.S. team to build an American-style corn ethanol plant along the Danube River about 50 miles from Budapest at Dunafoldvar, Hungary. The 50 MMgy plant being built adjacent to a Cargill grain handling facility is expected to be completed in mid-2012.

 Tate & Lyle repays $1.42 million in incentives
Tate & Lyle plc has repaid $1.42 million in state money it received as in incentive for building its ethanol plant in Fort Dodge, Iowa. The company halted construction just short of completion in March 2009 and announced this spring that start up would not be completed.

Cellulosic producers comment on RFS2 target
The comment period has ended for the U.S. EPA’s 2011 proposed renewable fuel standards and it appears that most producers agree that the agency’s proposal to lower next year’s cellulosic biofuels target to between 5 and 17.1 million gallons is an accurate goal. However, several producers submitted comments stating that continued lowering of the RFS2 mandate could severely hamper the expansion of cellulosic ethanol production.

KLE, Petrobras partner for bagasse-to-ethanol
Wyoming-based KL Energy Corp. (KLE) has signed an agreement to collaborate with major Brazilian energy firm Petrobras to develop and commercialize cellulosic ethanol technology for sugarcane bagasse feedstock.

S.D. plant to be auctioned by sealed bid
Maas Companies of Rochester, Minn., will liquidate the Genesis Ethanol I, 2-4 MMgy micro ethanol plant located outside of Sioux Falls in Parker, S.D., via sealed bid auction ending at 5 p.m. central daylight time on Friday, Sept. 24.

API has ribbon cutting for prototype plant
Georgia-based American Process Inc. recently held a ribbon cutting ceremony at the Alpena, Mich., location where the company intends to build a demonstration-scale cellulosic ethanol plant. The prototype biorefinery, which will be co-located with a Decorative Panels International hardwood plant, will produce 900,000 gallons of undenatured cellulosic ethanol and about 700,000 gallons of aqueous potassium acetate yearly.
